New Imperialism or New Capitalism

Socialism or Barbarism: From the American Century to the Crossroads by Istvan Meszaros,
Istvan Meszaros's bold new study analyzes the historical choices facing us at the outset of the new millennium. Drawing on the theoretical arguments of his monumental and widely-acclaimed work, Beyond Capital, Meszaros shows that the economic boom of the 1990s was built not only on the foundation of new, digital technologies but also on a new social and ethical basis. In the global quest for profit, capitalism has abandoned its claims to serve a larger historical cause. The failure of capitalism's historical mission is most evident in the end of the project of "Third World modernization" so essential to the claims of U.S. global power to represent an advance on old-style imperialism. Meszaros develops an illuminating analysis of the roots and tensions of the politics of U.S. global power from the time of Roosevelt's "Open Door" policy to the present. Against this historical background, he examines the dilemmas which will be faced in the making of U.S. foreign policy towards China -- the largest and most rapidly-expanding national market in the global economy and the newly-emerging rival to U.S. global dominance. Meszaros gives new meaning and urgency to the alternatives posed by Rosa Luxemburg at the beginning of the 20th century: socialism or barbarism.

British Imperialism, 1688-2000 by P. J. Cain,
"It is the standard work on British Imperialism and may remain so for the foreseeable future"-R.D. Long, Choice (on the first edition) Brilliantly written and authoritative analysis, provocative and engaging. Acknowledged by reviewers as the definitive account of British Imperialism, this trade edition, combines and updates the two individual first edition volumes. Explores and defines "gentlemanly capitalism," a phrase coined here by Cain & Hopkins, and includes a new introduction and conclusion and has widened in scope to include globalization. A milestone in the understanding of British history and imperialism, and truly global in its reach, this account received accolades from reviewers in its first edition. The first to coin the phrase "gentlemanly capitalism," Cain and Hopkins make the strong and provocative argument that it is impossible to understand the nature and evolution of British imperialism without taking account of the peculiarities of her economic development. In particular, the growth of the financial sector - and above all, the City of London - played a crucial role in shaping the course of British history and Britain's relations overseas. Now with a substantive new introduction and a conclusion, the scope of the original account has been widened to include an innovative discussion of globalization.
